Hygroscopic phase field fracture modelling of composite materials

Abstract This paper investigates the effect of moisture content upon degradation behaviour composite materials. A coupled phase field framework considering diffusion, hygroscopic expansion, and fracture is developed. multi-physics used to explore damage evolution materials, spanning micro-, meso- macro-scales. The micro-scale unit-cell model shows how mismatch between expansion fibre matrix leads interface debonding. From meso-scale ply-level model, we learn that distribution fibres has a minor influence on material properties, while increasing facilitates macro-scale laminate-level induces higher degree longitudinal ply relative transverse ply. work opens new avenue understand predict environmentally assisted in
